Merged two existing L.A. schools for art and music, Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney established CalArts in 1961, a new school for nurturing future generations of creative talent: a multidisciplinary “community of the arts” built around the real-life experience of working artists instead of the conventions of the academy. Moreover, the school would remove the walls separating the creative disciplines and encourage artists from different branches to mix and collaborate as a way of sparking new ideas and methods. CalArts offers programs in art, design, film, music, theater and dance. Art School has programs in Art, Photography and Media, Art and Technology, and Graphic Design prepare graduates to thoughtfully challenge the prevailing conventions of artistic expression, develop new forms and become innovators and leaders in their chosen fields.
All Program offer specific courses of study and yet none is isolated from the others. The students are highly encouraged to collaborate with one another across disciplines and to investigate hybrid art forms—not only within the School of Art but also throughout all of CalArts. This accumulation of varying expertise provides an invaluable foundation on which students can build an independent practice and expand upon the boundaries of art making.

This program tracks support students in a broad range of media and approaches, including still and moving images, installation, new media, sound, performance, and publication along with its roots in still photography, . All grounded in conversations about the histories of photography and media, the politics of representation, the changing role of cameras and photography in our daily lives, social documentary and activism.

The program encourages students to cultivate creative strategies, technical competencies and critical thinking skills while exploring and developing new applications of technology and media within a contemporary art practice. Students are required to interrogate the relationship between technology and art by incorporating innovation, multiple disciplines and diverse cultures into the student’s creative process—from object-based media to interactive design, from immersive installation to hybrid performance.

Students in this program create a body of work that is not simply a string of assignments—but which is uniquely theirs—and prepares them to carve an independent path into graphic design practice with a compelling portfolio marked by strong ideas expressed through form. The BFA track is centered around core courses supported by a number of required and elective classes, allowing both structure and flexibility within the curriculum, covering all aspects of graphic design practice. Baseline coursework is followed by more specialized classes in areas such as web design, motion graphics and type design.

The School of Film/Video

The School of Film/Video is one of the foremost places in the world to study and practice the art of the moving image as a personal, evolving and innovative artform. The School supports a full array of moving image/sound approaches with the overall goal of fostering “total film/video maker artists.” The curriculum allows every student to expand his or her cultural experience and, in the process, develop into a better artist. Students work in all modes of moving image and sound based artwork, including story- and character-based work in live-action and animated cinema; essayistic, socio-political and observational documentary projects in live-action, animation, installation and hybrid forms; and poetic, lyrical, structural and other modes of experimentation with the materials and forms of the moving image.
