The School of Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is one of the oldest accredited independent schools of art and design in the US. Established in 1866, SAIC provides a rich education in the studio arts and exhibition opportunities for its students. SAIC operated museum and school moved into a building designed and built for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

Art and Technology Studies (ATS) is a fine art department focused on the use of technology as an art medium. The department’s roots are the Kinetics area established in 1969 by Steve Waldeck and the Generative Systems area created in 1970 by Sonia Sheridan.

         Fashion Design

The fashion department at SAIC has evolved into a unique place to train the next generation of designers, artists, and thinkers. The faculty’s national and international professional experience offers unique opportunities for student learning, travel and global internships. Within the Fashion program, student will explore the most progressive achievements in the world of dress and fashion through the Fashion Resource Center, a hands-on collection of late 20th- and 21st-century designer garments representing extreme innovation.

More than 70 faculty whose work appears in galleries and museums across the globe. A long record of alumni who have attained a high-level of achievement in their careers, earning exhibitions in world-renowned galleries and museums, teaching positions at leading Institutions, as well as grants, awards and prizes reflecting excellence in their field. Recent alumni of note include: Tony Lewis, Allison Zuckerman, Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, Angel Otero, Amanda Ross-Ho, Jeni Spota, and Zak Prekop. Large, well-lit classrooms, critique spaces and studios where students develop their practices, hold open discussions and engage in rigorous dialogue with faculty and students which tests strategies of production and presentation.

The Sound Department is one of the few sound programs in the nation situated within the context of a fine arts school. The department was founded in 1972 as an area of study at SAIC, making it the world’s first department dedicated to the study of sound in an art school, and positioning it as a pioneer in the fields of sound art, experimental music, and sound studies.

Founded in 1879, the Art Institute houses the largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art on the planet outside the Louvre. It’s also home to more than 300,000 pieces of art, including some of the world’s most revered masterpieces. The museum offers a full schedule of special exhibits and public events. the Art Institute of Chicago is home to the greatest collection of Impressionist paintings outside of Paris, including works by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, and Van Gogh. Explore the Renzo Piano¬–designed Modern Wing and its extraordinary collection of works by Chagall, Dalí, Matisse, Picasso, and Pollock. The students and faculty from SAIC can visit Museum without admission and have classes infront of master works. The 264,000-square-foot (24,500 m²) building addition made the Art Institute the second-largest art museum in the United States.
